Both PCH households use consensus-based meetings to make decisions regarding household management. Currently residents pay an average of $367 per room per month. In addition, residents of each house contribute to their house’s “house fund” which is used to pay for utilities and household items. Repairs and improvements on the houses are coordinated by the Board of Directors using the organization’s funds, and made with energy efficiency and responsible stewardship in mind.
Located in the Brooklyn neighborhood of SE Portland, this large farmhouse style home was built in 1911. It was the first house to be purchased by PCH in 2003. The oversized lot provides space for gardening and lounging and a converted garage has become a music studio/ practice space for residents, as well as bicycle storage.
The Mississippi House
Right in the heart of North Mississippi’s shopping district, this household has been co-operatively run since long before the neighborhood became a trendy destination. It was rented by a collective for many years before the residents joined up with PCH to buy the building in 2003. The adjacent storefront was a punk record distro before becoming the Black Rose Infoshop, and has long hosted a free-cycle where people from the neighborhood can freely exchange unwanted clothes and other goods.
